About Toto

Toto was formed in 1976 by guitarists Jeff Porcaro, David Paich (who at the time were also well-known studio musicians working with Boz Scaggs) and singer/bassist Bobby Kimball. The name of the group came from a Latin word that means "all-encompassing" and was determined to explore every style of music.
Toto's third release, Turn Back, was a failure in 1981. However, they bounced back with their fourth release, Isolation, which contained two hit songs including the title track and Roseanna. The album and the tour helped them become a household name across the globe.
After a break of few years, Toto return with the album Fahrenheit in the year 1986. The album is different from the ballads of previous albums and includes some heavy rock. It was their first platinum album in North America.
During the recording process for the fifth album, the group loses its manager and is faced with financial problems. They decide to change their name and create a new album with an entirely new producer. Joseph Williams, the son of John Williams, the legendary film composer and actress Barbara Ruick from 1950s, replaces Fergie Frederiksen as lead singer. Joseph Williams is a natural frontman, and gives the band a much-needed boost.
The band releases Mindfields in 1999, and then embarks on a huge tour around the world. After a few weeks in Europe the band travels to Japan for sold-out shows. After a brief break, Toto resumes recording and begins recording their first live album titled Absolutely Live in 1993 which includes the cover of Weezer's track Hash Pipe in response to the band performing their hit song Africa during the recent tour. Toto's touring lineup is completed by drummer Lenny Castro, bassist Shannon Forrest and keyboardist Shem von Schroeck.

The next year, Toto toured together with Ringo Starr and his All Starr Band. This was the last time all of Toto's original members were together on stage at the same time. The band broke up again after this. Toto came back together for a benefit concert in 2010 to raise funds for the ALS Foundation. It was the first time in over 31 year that all of Toto's founding members performed together. The original Toto members were joined by keyboardist Greg Tambu who filled in for Paich and bassist David Hungate who filled in for Shem von Schroeck.
