Line-up
The album's third, Turn Back, marked the return to the traditional sextet format of the previous albums. It was a stronger, more consistent effort that had a harder edge than Hydra. The edgier sound of Turn Back was a reflection of the development of the group. Bobby Kimball's growing ability to play was evident in the vocal delivery of Joseph Williams, who had grown more confident and mature. David Paich's keyboard skills were also more sophisticated, sharper and less akin to earlier efforts.
After touring to promote their album, the group recorded an Amsterdam live concert that was released by Eagle Records as a 2-CD set entitled Falling In Between. In 1998, Paich & Lukather began exploring old tapes and demos to find songs that had never been recorded prior to. It was completed in 2001 as a double album titled Then & Now. By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The fourth album, Old Is New, was a commercial failure and singer Williams was suffering from a serious laryngitis condition which limited his singing capabilities.
