About Toto
The group Toto was formed in the year 1976 by guitarists Jeff Porcaro and David Paich (who were also well-known studio musicians who worked with Boz Scaggs at the time) as well as bassist/singer Bobby Kimball. Their name is derived from the Latin word meaning "all all-encompassing," the group was determined to explore all styles of music.
The third album from Toto, Turn Back, was not a success in 1981. However they made amends with their fourth release, Isolation, which contained two hits including the title track and Roseanna. The album and tour make them a household name around the world.
After a brief break, Toto returns with the album Fahrenheit. The album is a departure from the ballads that were featured on previous albums, and also features some heavy rock. This was their first platinum album in North America.
In the course of recording the band's fifth album the band loses their manager and are faced with financial difficulties. They decide to change their name and record a new album with the new producer. The lead singer Fergie Frederiksen departs and is replaced by Joseph Williams, son of legendary film composer John Williams and 1950s actress Barbara Ruick. Joseph Williams is a natural frontman and gives the band much-needed boost.
In 1999, the band release Mindfields and embarks on an extensive tour across the globe. After a few weeks in Europe The band then travels to Japan for sold-out shows. After a brief break, Toto resumes their recording and releases their first live album entitled Absolutely Live in 1993. It also features a cover of Weezer’s song Hash Pipe as a response to the band covering Africa on their recent tour. Toto's touring band is rounded out by drummer Lenny Castro, bassist Shannon Forrest and keyboardist Shem von Schroeck.

The first toto album was the self-titled Toto, released in 1978. The album was a huge hit and launched the band into international fame. Since then, the band has released 14 albums that have all been hits.
In 1984, Toto wrote their first, and to this date only, movie score for the film Dune. This was a major undertaking that required the entire group to be involved. Kingdom of Desire was another success album. The following year, Toto toured together with Ringo Starr and his All Starr Band. This was the last time that all of Toto's original members were performing at the same time. After that, the group was again disbanded. However, Toto reunited in 2010 to perform a benefit for the ALS Foundation. It was the first time in more than 31 years that all of Toto's original members were on stage together. In addition to the original members keyboardist Greg Tambu filled in for Paich and bassist David Hungate filled in for Shem Von Schroeck.

Toto has been one of the most loved rock groups for more than three decades, having scored massive hits such as "Rosanna," "Hold The Line," and their 8X platinum smash, "Africa." With a variety of influences, ranging from progressive rock to world rhythms, jazz and soul, the group continues to please their fans with their anthemic arena rock.
Despite their fame, the band faced several challenges in their final years. In 2002, keyboardist David Paich and drummer Greg Phillinganes were forced to take a medical leave of absence. Shem von Schröeck took over however, the group wasn't the same without Paich or Phillinganes. In 2008, a series of lineup changes as well as a series of albums that were disappointing led Toto to break up for a few years. However, the group resumed touring in 2012 following the release of their album 40 Trips Around the Sun.
The album marked a return to the band's top form and the tour that came with it was a sold-out event in North America and Europe. Toto's reunion was bolstered by the inclusion of guitarist Steve Lukather and bassist Shem von Schroeck, who had both rejoined the band.
Toto's music is as relevant today as it was during the 1970s and 1980s, as it has gained new audiences with each generation. Their success has made them a constant presence in pop culture and their live shows are always full of energy and excitement.
