Line-up

Turn Back, the band's third studio album, was an attempt to return to the traditional sextet style and it was a more consistent, more powerful effort with a harder edge. The more edgier sound of Turn Back reflected the growth of the band. The drummer Bobby Kimball's increasing ability to play was evident in the vocals of Joseph Williams, who had grown more confident and mature. David Paich's keyboard skills were as well more refined, more precise, and less derivative on previous recordings.

After touring to promote the album, the band recorded a live concert in Amsterdam that was released as a set of two CDs titled Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. The group released a new studio album a few months after, and went on a tour around the world to help promote it. During this time keyboardist Greg Phillinganes filled in for Paich, and bassist David Hungate left the group to spend more time with his family.

In 1998, Paich & Lukather began looking through old tapes and demos to find songs that hadn't been recorded prior to. It was released as a double-album titled Then and Now in 2001. It was the first album in the history of the band not to include any single song that had the word "A" in the title, and it also contained one previously unreleased track, "Kari-Anne".

By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The group's fourth album, Old Is New, was a commercial failure, and vocalist Williams suffered from a bad case of laryngitis which limited his singing capabilities. Hungate also returned to Nashville and Leland Sklar's drumming duties were replaced by Shem Von Schroeck.

Downes and the other original members of Asia - Wetton, Palmer, and Howe--convened an event in England in early 2006 to discuss the possibility of restructuring the band. The group, which was missing Howe who was working with Yes during that time, became Toto XIV. They toured extensively.
